Yes peoples, we sure you are all familiar with club Zen, but are you familiar with Chutney Sundays at Zen? Well we believe it was the 3rd of it's kind to be taking place, and with all de ole talk and gossip going around about how hype the previous two had been, TJJ though it was time to get the story straight from the horses’ mouth and head up to de club personally.

Arriving there generally early (bout 10 PM) things seemed pretty laid back. Stage performances however had already begun with Anil Bheem and the BRMZ trying to get the crowd warmed up and de party started. Eventually people generally began freeing up, but this by no way was anything close to the picture we had painted of how folks said the de previous two Chutney sessions went down. Like we in for ah disappointment here bwoy! Even the turn out seemed ah bit shaky ... hummmm.

Well you know what they say, “If life gives you a lemon, BUST OUT THE TEQUILA AND SALT!”, and so we did. Mingle here, take ah drink there and before you know it, we begin seeing some crews we know and so de liming start. Now to be honest we not too familiar with some of de renditions Anil Bheem and the BRMZ did, but they did manage to get the crowd into de mood and had them screwing a couple of light bulbs every now and again.

At about 11:30 PM folks were in for a surprise as Karma hit the stage. Known to be one of the more popular chutney acts in T&T, they kicked off with a real vigorous burst of energy which was passed unto the crowd who seemed most trilled to see them. Now we were expecting to hear a whole heap of chutney, bhangra and a host of other types of Indian songs, but were very shocked to see that a lot of the recitals came from other genres of music such as Soca, Dancehall and even some Hip Hop. If you see women slashing their fingers to de Hot Wuk!

During Karma’s performance, Rakesh Yankaran aka The Raja also came on and recited a couple of songs as well. As nice as they were, we kept thinking to ourselves ... if only we cud speak Hindi!! (he hee) Karma performed for almost 2 hours, and by 1:30 AM they wrapped things up ending the live performances for the night. The DJs then took things over pumping some tunes for those who stayed back to shake a little something.

At the end of it all, an interesting night! All the bands put on entertaining performances as they showcased some Indian culture that exist in T&T. Hats off to the promoters as well for putting it all together. Who knows ... maybe we might end up in de next one!
