BOLD. BRIGHT. BEAUTIFUL

The 11th Annual Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York was held on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at the New York Technical College in downtown Brooklyn. We actually like this location, but finding parking was a bit of a challenge. After dealing with Manhattan's traffic, we arrived at the Klitgord Auditorium just before eight to the sound of Machel Montano's "Jumbie". The contestants were individually parading in carnival costumes on stage; so we knew we missed a great deal of the show, which was scheduled to kickoff at 7pm sharp.

The show then moved to the talent portion, where we noticed that there were only 8 of the 12 young women scheduled to compete on the night. Other than being 4 contestants short, everything the pageant promised, was delivered; a spectacular showcase of contestants in four couture catwalk categories, carnival costume, evening gown as well as a talent competition. We were even treated to a duet dance number by Khadija Nicholas, Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York 2006. The show was hosted by Trinidad born actress Hazelle Goodman, who not only did an excellent job hosting the show, but had the Brooklyn audience laughing at her witty humour throughout the evening.

After the evening gown segment, the contestants were challenged with various questions asked by the judging panel before being serenaded by Soca entertainer Jason Benn. Tribute was then paid to the work of rehearsal director Jerry Brown who celebrates his 10 year anniversary with the organization. Before selection of the final 4, Miss T&T Independence 2007 (who flew in directly from Trinidad) and Khadija Nicholas both graced the stage. A lovely video recapping Khadija's rein as Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York was shown.

After deliberating, it was time to announce the new Miss T&T New York.... drum roll please....... Amber Brennan, Miss St. James, is Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York 2007!! The 17 year old is a high school graduate on her way to college to pursue a degree in Forensic Science. Ironically, Brennan who does not know her Trinidadian biological father used the pageant to connect to a cultural heritage she was denied and to find a part of her that is missing. She couldn't have asked for a better opportunity! Amber, also took home most of the Individual Awards of the evening.

Crowd favourite Miss Point Fortin, Petal Mc Cree, was the 1st runner-up, followed by 2nd and 3rd runners-up Jodi Lezama (Miss Gasparillo) and Carlana Ramlochansingh (Miss St. Augustine). Hats off to the producer, Renee Cummings, for putting together another successful show.
